EARTH DAY | KEEPING MY SIDE OF THE STREET CLEAN

Ashleigh cleaning up her road

I went from my house to highway 230 on the Hondo Seco Rd. I had planned to do both sides of the street but by the time I got to 230 (a little under a mile away) my bag was too heavy, so I just headed back on my side of the street picking up a few more cigarette butts on the way. I didn't feel bad about not cleaning up both sides of the street because of a saying in 12 Step rooms, "Keep Your Side of the Street Clean," or sometimes, "Focus on Your Side of the Street." To me, this saying basically means to take the High Road; if someone does something to hurt you, don't try to hurt them back. Kinda like what Michelle Obama says, "When they go low, we go High." It's also about not blaming and it's also about not judging. It's easy to judge after picking up the umpteenth mini on the side of the road, but instead of focusing on whoever threw the mini's 'side of the street,' which I know nothing about, I chose to focus on mine.
